Garden City is a village in the Town of Hempstead in Nassau County, New York. The community is served by the Garden City School District. The village was founded in 1869 by Scottish millionaire Alexander Turney Stewart as an upscale community and retreat for wealthy city dwellers. The proximity to Hempstead, the commercial center of Long Island, helped the new community grow quickly. Following the demolition of the Old Garden City Hotel, in 1978 fifty of the original structures in the community were collectively designated as the A. T. Stewart Era Buildings and added to the National Register of Historic Places.
