Levittown is a hamlet in the Town of Hempstead in Nassau County, New York. The community is served by the Island Trees Union Free School District and the Levittown Union Free School District. Levittown is named for William “Bill” Levitt, son of Abraham Levitt, who founded the building firm Levitt and Sons. Bill Levitt had served in the Navy during World War II and following the war he convinced his father and brother to incorporate the utilitarian building practice employed by the Navy. Bill and his architect brother Alfred designed a one story home with an expandable attic and two days after the property was announced, half of the 2,000 properties were already rented. By 1951 the Levitts had constructed over 17,000 homes in the surrounding area.
